Bricked

I am but a mere noob. Actually a stupid, impulsive noob. Bummer...
And it's only been 4 1/2 months since I bought my Mini 311. Bummer...
I still have 8 months from the monthly installment pay plan. Bummer...

If you're running OS X Snow Leopard on your Mini 311 with Atom N280, 2 GB DDR RAM and you've successfully overclocked it to 2.0 GHz, but you're stuck during boot up at NVEthernet : Ethernet address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx blah blah, though it's not written in gold-gilded letters in your Mini 311's screen, you should know it means STOP right there. Don't attempt 2.3 GHz in attempts to workaround that hang up just because it's listed in some forum post.

Now what to do with my poor Mini 311?

Err, make that what to do with poor me who doesn't know where to go now that she's without her beloved Mini MacBook Pro??

I feel so bad about this: I feel like I talked you into overclocking and that now your unit is dead because of me.

I will admit thatI have not had success with 2.3GHz as my machine always gets too hot. Actually 2GHz was a pretty good clock for the N280, but that is irrelevant now.

Seriously though, if you ever plan to overclock again once you get it back (and I would understand why you wouldn't) I will be more than happy to walk you through it more.

You have done so much for our community (the 311 easily is the coolest Hackintosh community since the Dell Mini 9), that I certainly feel indebted to you.

Please keep us posted on getting it fixed through warranty, and I please don't be a stranger on the forum just because you are temporally down for the count....we will mis you too much....

Sorry to hear the terrible news!

I would have recommended decreasing FSB until Ethernet worked. Probably somewhere around 190 MHz FSB (1.9 GHz) should work.

I don't think there's anything that can be done now. RMA it... make a backup of the hard drive before sending it away. :-/

No, DO NOT feel bad at all. It's entirely my fault - I'm always like this; rushing head long into something and it's not the first time I smashed into (no pun intended) a brick wall. I couldn't wait, very impatient and so I took the plunge with very little to equip me with.
That's just how my personal learning process works, I guess. ;)

Once I get it back, I'd still be game with overclocking - all the more now I think cause I know the limit already. I was able to raise it upto 1.8 GHz without the boot freeze at NVEthernet line. And 2.0 GHz didn't brick it-only that freeze.

@joe_dude
Thanks for the kind thought, I really appreciate it :)

You both, we'll talk FSB and Bios values when I get my Mini 311 back. I'd really like to be mentored by overclocking gurus like you. I don't think I'll stop trying to learn. A dead netbook is tons better than dead brain cells. ;)

Oh, btw, it's only 2.2 GHz. That's as far as I got. I was actually being a perfect idiot when I decided I would try each entry in this N280 overclocking table.

Unfortunately, most of us don't have an N280. So while the table is accurate, there was very little feedback.

Given that you said it was hot where you lived, anything over 2.0 GHz would have probably been risky anyway... unless your next project was to improve the cooling. ;)

IMHO, I don't think you need mentoring really. The sum of our Mini 311 OC'ing knowledge is on the hardware forum. But if you a question, please ask. Better safe than bricked. ;)

Hope you get your Mini 311 back soon... hard to be without it personally. :(

I bricked my hp mini 311 as well when i overclocked my hp mini 311 n280, fortunately i found someone who could reflash the bios settings, and my hp mini was back to life.

@jovy: post the procedure to unbrick the mini 311 pleeeeease!!!

you have to remove the flash chip and have it reflashed with the default bios settings.

Soldering - eww.

see "emergency recovery" section here:

that worked to unbrick mine when I tried 2.4ghz. btw, 2.3ghz works great for me!

While I really appreciate the concern, I just have to say that I've tried every possible method (without unsoldering parts from the mobo) to revive my bricked Mini 311.

Short circuting the CMOS slot on the mobo with a needle-type pair of pliers? Done! Still bricked.

You name it, I've done it :D

So now I'm just waiting for the local PC store to call and tell me when I can pick up my Mini 311 again - that's after 2-3 weeks, or so.

Again, thanks very much for the concern and effort to help me :D

God speed!

Also, my MIni 311 has an Atom N280 chip and according to authorities, it can't go past 2.0 GHz for a safe OC. :(

Good for you to have 2.3 GHz, though. Whatever your Atom chip model is...
